The Canton Fair is a comprehensive one with the longest history

China Import and Export Fair is also renowned as the Canton Fair. It is held biannually in Guangzhou every spring and autumn, with a history of 55 years since 1957. The Fair is a comprehensive one with the longest history, the highest level, the largest scale, the most complete in exhibit variety, the broadest distribution of overseas buyers and the greatest business turnover in China.
Trading Delegations, being composed of more than twenty thousand of Chinas best foreign trade corporations (enterprises) with good credibility and sound financial capabilities, take part in the Fair, including foreign trade companies, factories, scientific research institutions, foreign invested enterprises, wholly foreign-owned enterprises, private enterprises, etc.

The Canton fair has long been a platform for Chinese exporters to demonstrate their products and services to buyers around the world. And the reason for its success lies in the strict selection of the exhibitors.
If you are running a fledging company in China aimed at exporting, the Canton Fair is the best doorway to the international market. It is a place for new companies to make their show, and for new clients to find what they need. And before that, the companies need to pass another test.
The Canton Fair is a Trade Only show that exhibits products and services in both the consumer and industry sectors and which concentrates mainly on export trade. April 1957 saw the very first Canton Fair being held in the former Sino-Soviet Friendship Building in North Guangzhou. The Friendship Building’s exhibition space was spread over 18,000 sq.m. and was able to contain the entire fair. Several years later the fair was moved to the Liuhua Complex and remained there for many years. Recent fairs have taken place in Guangzhou’s enormous China Import and Export Fair Complex, however, and, with 1,125,000 sq.m. of exhibition space now available – and fully occupied – the fair is now a very different exhibition from that which debuted in 1957.

Shamian Island is not only a great historic site but an important port for Guangzhou’s foreign trade

Shamian Island, formerly known as Shameen Island or Shamin Island, from its Cantonese pronunciation, is a sandbank island in the Liwan District of Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, China. The island’s name literally means “sandy surface” in Chinese.
The territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing government in the 19th century. The island is a gazetted historical area that serves as a tranquil reminder of the colonial European period, with quiet pedestrian avenues flanked by trees and lined by historical buildings in various states of upkeep. The island is the location of several hotels, a youth hostel, restaurants and tourist shops selling curios and souvenirs.More information about China Tour in chinatourguide.com

Shamian Island is not only a great historic site but an important port for Guangzhou’s foreign trade from Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Now the island with eight major roads and streets, such as Shamian North Street, Shamian Street and Shamian South Street, etc.
It had been a tourist attraction as well as an important port for Guangzhou’s foreign trade from Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. It became a strategic point for city defense during the opium war period, after which the Qing Administration was forced to agree to ‘lease’ Shamian to the British and French imperialist powers, thus Shamian was reduced to the British and French concessions and changed to the present name. When digging the waterway during 1859 to 1862, Shamian was separated from the north bank of the Pearl River and a stone bridge was built only in the east to connect the north bank. Now Shamian embraces eight major roads and streets, of which three are from east to west: Shamian North Street, Shamian Street and Shamian South Street, and five from south to north: Shamian No. 1 to 5 Streets. And in the east, north and west there are respectively East Bridge, West Bridge and New West Bridge to connect Liuersan Road.

The bi-annual Canton Fair is the largest trade fair in China

The bi-annual Canton Fair is the largest trade fair in China and attracts more than 400,000 visitors every year. Given its position as a major Asian business and exhibition center, Guangzhou should continue to generate a steady stream of business visitors.
“It’s a one-stop shop – you don’t have to travel to all of the countries to meet these buyers,” says Myles Matthews, president of the Global Trade and Technology Center, a trade-promotion group in New York.

The fair is “an important tool for New York City businesses who are trying to leverage the opportunities and resources unique to China,” says Ann Li, executive director of the Center for Economic Transformation in the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
“Clearly, New York businesses seeking to expand need to at least consider how China and Chinese partners fit into their expansion plans,” she says.

China has exerted increased efforts in expanding trade with developing countries like Brazil and Russia. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has recently proposed a free trade pact between China and Mercosur, a political and economic agreement among Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. China seeks to double its yearly trade with Latin America to US$400 billion over the following five years.
Russia is considered the most important strategic partner of China, and trade relations between the two nations are still buoyant. Trade between them reached about US$80 billion last year, and they plan to hit the US$200 billion mark by 2020.

Polo Birth (波罗诞) is one of the most influential temple fairs in South China, and has more than a thousand years of history. The fair is held in February 11 – 13 at God of South China Sea Temple (南海神庙) in Huangpu, Guangzhou. Once a year worshippers flock to pray to the God of the South China Sea. It is said that in the Tang Dynasty an envoy from Polo, a small nation near India, came to Guangzhou. The envoy was so fascinated by the prosperity of the city that he missed his ship back home. After his death, Polo Temple was built in his honour. It marked the starting point of the “Maritime Silk Road” to the Indian Ocean in ancient China.

Tips: if you like to take part in local event or festival, do contact your guide or search as many information as possible in advance. There will be lots of people at that time, and you are likely to get lost by circling around without even find an entrance.

Guangzhou Cantonese Opera

Guangzhou Cantonese Opera

When you dip your toe in Guangzhou, Cantonese Opera would be one of the best activities for you to understand the stunning Cantonese culture.

Guangzhou Cantonese Opera

Cantonese Operatic Songs is the purely singing version of Cantonese Opera, without costume or acting. Its history can be traced back to the middle 19th century, when “Shiniang”(blind female singers) sang and played the accompaniment themselves in restaurants, streets or by private invitation. They sang in “Operatic Mandarin,” and several became famous. In the early 20th Century, “Nuling” (女伶, sighted female singers) dominated the stage instead of the blind singers. They reformed the performance by adding a band and singing in Cantonese. Soon male singers joined the performances, and such entertainment became a regular feature in restaurants across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

Tips: You will be more than a little fascinated by the local operas / shows if you come to get some general knowledge or background of the story before during your tour in China.

Guangzhou Landmarks

Visiting the landmarks can highlight your exploration in a city, while there are two landmarks you can include on your getaway when you are in Guangzhou.

Five Rams Stone Sculpture

Located in Yuexiu Park, Five Rams Stone Sculpture makes Guangzhou a nickname of Yangcheng (City of Goats). It has been the city symbol and landmark for years. It’s said that in a famine of Zhou Dynasty, five gods descended to the world by five goats which held dropping ears of rice in their mouth. The gods bestowed the people with ears of rice and blessed the city out of starvation forever. And those goats stayed in the city after the gods left and turned into stone as protectors.

Canton Tower

Located in the center of Guangzhou city, Canton Tower, nicknamed Pretty Waist Lady, became a new symbol and landmark of Guangzhou as soon as it’s completed. It’s mainly used for sightseeing with four unique features. From the transverse Ferris wheel on the top by which one can have an overview of Guangzhou city, to the revolving restaurant that can hold 400 people for dinner, to the 4D cinema and gifts & souvenir shop, all of them are sitted on hundreds of meters high.

The Schedule for 111th Canton Fair

Pazhou Complex

111th Canton Fair is held in Pazhou Complex, Guangzhou,  from April 15, 2012 to May 5, 2012. Due to various products that are focused here, Canton Fair will be divided into 3 phases for convenience and every phase provides a complete package of 5 days business & trade networking among international visitors & China exhibitors. The details are as follows:

Business Discussion during Canton Fair

Aim at which kind of product you are interested in, and make a reasonable schedule for your trip. By the way, there are several days you can make use of to do other things between these 3 Phases. To take a visit to Guangzhou or try the local food can be a nice choice to relax yourself from business.

Yum Cha

Yum cha (Drink Tea), Cantonese Style Morning or Afternoon Tea

Yum Cha

Yum cha, in Cantonese literally means “drink tea”, is a Cantonese style morning or afternoon tea, which involves drinking Chinese tea and eating dim sum dishes. To try it is not only a good way to learn about Cantonese culture, but also an interesting experience to taste some yummy food.

Yum cha primarily refers to the tradition of morning tea in Cantonese cuisine exemplified by the traditional tea houses of Guangzhou. Due to the prevalence of Cantonese cuisine outside China, yum cha tradition can be found in many parts of the world. If you have a chance to visit Guangzhou, you should not miss a genuine one here.

Shrimp Dumplings

Similarly to a Western morning or afternoon tea, despite the name, yum cha is focused as much on the food items served with the tea as the tea itself. These food items are collectively known as “dim sum”, a varied range of small dishes which may constitute or replace breakfast, brunch or afternoon tea. Dishes are usually steamed or fried and may be savoury or sweet, including steamed buns, rice noodle rolls and desserts. All of them are exquisite and delicious.

Steamed Pork Dumplings

During yum cha, it is customary to pour tea for others before filling one’s own tea cup and it is most gracious to be the first to pour tea. When tea drinkers tap the table with two (occasionally one) fingers of the same hand, an action known as finger kowtow, it is an expression of gratitude to the member of the party who filled their cups, so do not forget to tap the table with your fingers if you are there.
